My favorite NEX camera lens (apart from the special-purpose SLR Magic 35/1.7) is the kit 18-55 tele-zoom. But I often found myself wishing for a longer focal length when outside or at events. I tried a few old Minolta lenses with an adapter, but these were difficult to use since they lack stabilization and auto-focus. So I decided to pick up the Sony 55-210 tele-zoom for the NEX system; here’s my hands-on review.

Wanted: A Longer Lens for Sony NEX Camera System

Walking around with my NEX-5, I often find myself drawn to extreme close-up photos with a shallow depth of field. This is mostly due to the limited lenses I have on hand: I usually carry just my SLR Magic 35 mm and the Sony 18-55 kit zoom. Although 55 mm on a NEX-5 is equivalent to almost 85 mm on a 35mm camera, it’s still not much of a zoom. I often found myself wishing I could “go closer” to more distant subjects.

You say the light was going away as in "at the end of the day kind of light". It looks pretty colorful for that time. Looking at the clouds above the empty section of bridge they look like they might of had a slight orange cast to them. I find that some times a color balance tweek will show it if it's there. I like the picture for it vast depth.

  Can you imagine what this change of imaging from film and chemicals into digital imagery has done to the film industry as I knew it.   In yesterday’s newspaper, an article stated that Kodak may go into bankruptcy. Argraph had grown from a one man operation into a staff of 6 sales reps covering the East Coast camera shops, which were opening up to service the demand for cameras and equipment. In 1963, the growth of the film industry was phenomenal, similar to what you see now in the digital age.   We needed more space to warehouse the equipment we handled. When we took on the distribution of the Durst enlargers, we had to rent an office space on the same floor, just to store them. We moved to a full floor space,on West 19th St. , near 7th Ave. And I was swept up with the growth of the photo industry.   It’s going to take several   weeks for me to adjust to this new equipment.   We definitely required more space and better shipping facilities....

This video was shot with 5 Kodak Zi8s, a Canon HV40 and a Canon 7D. Even though you can see a difference between these cameras (well people on Vimeo will be able too) the average person maybe not but even if you do I think it doesn’t hurt the... I used this remote from Kodak which is about 12 bucks and should work on any Kodak pocket video camera. The great thing about that is if you have all Kodak cameras you can start the cameras rolling from far away. I had 7 cameras there that night with one other camera guy Tony Gasbarro. One of the things that helps them mix together so well is the audio mix. So I brought some cameras with me. The live mix was done by Jeff Powell. The band is Big Band Boom. I think they actually mix together very well. Yeah I’m friends with a sound guy that has a big band. The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FT4 is waterproof to depths of up to 12m and is dustproof. It’s also shockproof, resisting drops from a height of up to 2m and can withstand temperatures as low as -10C, Panasonic says.

It includes a 28mm wide-angle lens with a 4.6x optical zoom and a 12.1-megapixel sensor. It features intelligent zoom technology which extends the zoom ratio by 2x, maintaining the image quality in digital zoom.

The camera can shoot full HD video and is equipped with the Venus Engine, which can allow the camera to record full HD footage and high-resolution consecutive shots at 3.7fps.

It's good for the price. I got one in Aus duty free for just under $180 to take on a few trips in the Pacific. Firstly, you cannot compare it to a DSLR so don't expect extraordinary picture quality and options. The photos (and movies with sound) I got from it however were surprisingly good and had lots of colour, especially the blues which are important for island photos. The screen is hard to see when you are actually diving due to reflections so you pretty much see something you want to photo, and go crazy with the photos so you can be sure you actually get one good shot. You must let it soak for a while in fresh water after each use.
